Workplace conflict hits record levels

Following a survey of over 4,500 working-age people, ACAS has reported that 44% of workers experienced workplace conflict in the past year, marking the highest level recorded. Capability and performance issues emerged as the most common sources of tension, followed by personal disagreements and relationship strains. Conflict was found to be more common among workers whose disability significantly affects daily life, with 68% reporting disputes, compared with 41% of those without a disability. Levels were also higher within smaller businesses.

The effects were significant, with many employees saying these disputes contributed to stress, anxiety or depression, as well as reduced motivation, reflecting the ongoing impact of unresolved or poorly managed conflict. Despite these challenges, most disagreements were resolved informally, either through conversations with managers or direct dialogue between colleagues. Experts have highlighted the importance of early intervention, inclusive cultures and equipping managers with the skills to de-escalate issues.
